When you are experiencing thinning hair, the health of your scalp is crucial for the chance of regrowing hair. Therefore, therapeutic shampoos definitely help with the process of maintaining and regrowing hair. Remember when your hair is thinning, your scalp is more sensitive to harsh chemicals. The good news is there are number of shampoos that are specifically designed for preventing and (yes) even regrowing hair as illustrated below.
Nizoral Shampoo Hair Loss Review
Nizoral shampoo contains a special medication that is believed to help with thinning hair called ketocanzonale. What is ketocanzonale? Ketocanzonale is a medication found in shampoos as an anti-fungal medication for scalp conditions. Most people do not realize that hair regrowth treatments are found by accident (Rogaine was stemmed from a blood pressure medication that caused an increase in hair). For ketocanzonale, the same thing happened when this wonder drug for dandruff not only treated dandruff but also increased the diameter of the hair follicle and the hair count on the scalp. Shampoo containing ketocanzonale is a must have for a good hair regrowth regimen. This medication also improves the overall health of the scalp and helps ease itching associated with products containing minoxidil (Rogaine). Here is an interesting Chinese case study with the topical use of ketocanzonale for thinning hair below:
Ketocanzonale Hair Loss Case Study:
A Japanese study of 6 males from 23 to 51 years old participated in a clinical trial of the topical use of ketocanzonale which is found in common shampoos such as nizoral. They exhibited the grade II vertex to IVa androgenetic alopecia (AGA) based on the norwood hair loss scale for men. The test subjects applied topical 2% nizoral each day during or immediately after washing with their regular shampoo. After several months, clinical pictures were taken to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. Two of the men, one 23 with grade II vertex and the other, 25 with Va (AGA), showed remarkable hair regrowth after six and ten months. The 23 year old stopped using ketocanzonale and 3 months later hair thinning recurrence on the vertex was noted (Fig 1c). When he started using the ketocanzonale again during shampooing, hairs on the vertex grew again after 3 months (Fig. 1d). This evidence shows that there are benefits from using ketocanzonale as a medication for thinning hair. In addition, a 41 year old man showed a slight increase in the vertex hair growth after one year. The other 3 men, 31,38 and 51 years old did not show a significant improvement. These discoveries may suggest that topical ketocanzonale with shampoo can be effective for some males with (AGA). This theory also may indicate the “response” that each male can have with any product that is suggested to help hair loss. How to use Nizoral Shampoo
Our team has found that Nizoral by itself should be used 1 to 2 times per week with leaving the product on for at least 5 minutes in the shower for optimal absorption. In addition, Nizoral can be prone to cause dryness so a good conditioner should be used after if needed. The only known side effects of using Nizoral containing ketoconazole is scalp irritation. If the scalp is too sensitive to the product, a reduction in use and a moisturizing conditioner can help offset this side effect.

Best Thickening Shampoos
Although having a shampoo that can help re-grow hair is beneficial, a shampoo that can actually thicken existing hair is not something to leave out. We have reviewed dozens of shampoos that “claim” to make your hair thicker but we have 3 products or brands that really live up to their promises. Below we will cover our top 3 recommendations for shampoos and conditioners that thicken or “boost the volume of your hair.”
Aveda Pure Abundance Shampoo Review
Aveda’s Pure Abundance Shampoo made it first on our list for one reason, “science.” This shampoo combines the best ingredients such as acacia gum, jasmine, and 100% organic peppermint, palmarosa and ylang ylang. Acacia gum is a natural gum that is made from the hardened sap of the acacia tree. This gum helps fill out fine or limp hair to produce more volume. In addition, jasmine provides a natural fragrance and has organic properties that nourish the hair. Peppermint oil is also used in this formula and has been shown to stimulate the scalp to increase blood flow to carry more nutrients to follicles. Finally, palmarosa and ylang ylang are also organic essential oils that provide natural aromas and have hair nourishment properties. We have found that this shampoo has the perfect balance of ingredients that give you a noticeable boost in thickness and volume after each use. To compliment the shampoo, Aveda’s Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner is a bonus that even further thickens the hair at the same time making it softer and more manageable. Having a hair conditioner that can actually provide thickness and volume is very difficult. Most conditioners can leave the hair too greasy and can actually cause the hair to lay flat. However, Aveda combines natural bulking agents such as kaolin clay and acacia gum. This conditioner also contains the same organic oils as the shampoo which makes the two products have the same aroma.
Jason Thin to Thick Extra Volume Shampoo Review
Jason products have been on the natural beauty market for a number of years but they stay relatively low key in the media. However, they produce a long list of shampoos that are formulated to effectively treat hair conditions with quality ingredients. Jason Thin to Thick Extra Volume Shampoo comes in at number two on our list because it has a solid reputation for thickening hair with its two primary ingredients, biotin and panthenol. In addition, this shampoo probably has the most impressive list of other beneficial ingredients that are all healthy for the hair and scalp. One of the most noticeable features of this shampoo is its ability to form a rich lather that cleanses the scalp but at the same time infuses each hair follicle with effective nutrients. This shampoo is similar to Aveda’s Pure Abundance line because results can be noticed only after a few uses. In addition, they also make a Thin to Thick Extra Volume Conditioner that works as a powerful duo to make your hair thicker and fuller. Their conditioner contains biotin, panthenol, vitamins a, c, and e which all nourish the entire scalp and each hair follicle. Across all hair loss forums, Jason products always make the top of the list for any question regarding “what is the best shampoo to thicken hair?” Well we totally agree and suggest this product if your are looking for an affordable shampoo and conditioner that will make your hair look healthier and thicker.
Mane n Tail Shampoo Review
This is probably one of the most unique suggestions for your hair on this site but we promise it’s for a good reason. Mane n Tail Shampoo was originally created for horses. Yes we said horses but this shampoo ended up crossing over to human use because of the powerful nutrients and proteins that can improve the overall health and thickness of the hair and scalp. One of the best benefits of this shampoo is it can be literally bought in any drug store at an inexpensive price. What makes this shampoo good for thickness is because of its core ingredients. This shampoo contains a micro-enriched protein formula which leaves the hair soft and shiny. The lather of the shampoo provides a deep, penetrating action that cleanses the scalp of dirt and oils but does not strip the hair of its natural oils. Also the shampoo is fortified with moisturizers and emollients that build body, shine, and makes the hair healthy and thicker overall after each use. Compared to Aveda and Jason, Mane n Tail also makes a conditioner that was originally formulated to promote fuller, stronger, flowing manes in horses that were on a “show level.” However, similar to the shampoo, there was a cross over with this conditioner being used in conjunction with the shampoo to make the hair healthier and thicker for humans. The conditioner contains natural oils that nourish and condition brittle or dry hair. After using the conditioner, the hair should be soft, manageable, and the product will continue to keep your hair longer, stronger, fuller, and healthier.
